Iron Man 3 - Review

Iron Man 3 hit the theaters in the United States this past weekend after breaking Box Office records overseas.  The movie has received a very mixed reaction from audiences and various movie reviewers all over the internet.  I decided to throw in my two cents and give my own short review of the movie.

Check out this video to hear my thoughts.

ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income, Third Edition

I chose to do my report on the book titled ‘ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income, Third Edition.’  Co-authored by Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett and published by John Wiley & Sons in 2012 on March 20.  I found accessed the book using the Community of Southern Nevada online library Safari Books Online.  This book is a good read and one that I would highly recommend to any individuals who have seriously entertained the thought of blogging as a means to make money.
The book begins with each author giving a brief introduction of themselves and the stories of how they got started with blogging.  They talk about how each started blogging at different points in their lives from their early beginnings as hobby bloggers and their evolution into becoming full time bloggers.  It was not an easy road for them and that there were many difficulties along their journey.  They stress that turning blogging into a moneymaking venture is not an endeavor to take on lightly and should not be looked at as a get rich tactic.
After the brief introduction, they start with the most basic question.  What is a blog?  They put it simply and describe a blog as a particular type of website.  They site content, syndication and conversation as the three main areas that make blogs different from other types of websites.  One of the best ways to have a successful blog starts with choosing the right topic.  It is a much more important factor than one may think.  It can be the main reason your blog succeeds or fails.  They suggest choosing a niche topic that targets a specific audience or demographic.  This method allows you to have a more focused approach with the content you provide and grow readership more effectively.
Next, they go into the different blog platform options you have to choose from at your disposal.  There are many factors such as capability, complexity, popularity and price to consider before making a choice.  Then they weigh the pros and cons of hosted and self-hosted blogging platform services that one must also take into account.  Once a platform is chosen, they explain how important it is to carefully select a domain name that gives a sense of credibility and professionalism to your blog.  They go on to emphasize how critical quality content is to the success of your blog.  It is imperative to have not just good but captivating content that entices readers to return.
Next are the meat and potatoes of the book.  How do you earn money from a blog?  They describe two methods of earning money from a blog, direct and indirect monetization.  Direct monetization is income that comes from your blogs such as advertising, sponsorships and paid reviews.  Indirect monetization is income you gain because of your blog such as freelance contracts and consultancy opportunities.  They go into detail about the advantages and disadvantages of each and explain it is not an either or situation.  They also help you decide which method will best suit your needs.  However, those are not the only ways to make money from a blog.  If you are able to create a successful enough blog, you might have the opportunity to sell the blog outright.  It is a lot like selling physical property.
As I stated before I found this book to be very insightful about the possibilities of how to earn money from a blog.   My only small complaint while reading is the constant references to go to their blogs within the book felt a little self-serving.  Nevertheless, I liked that they started you out with the foundations of how to create a successful blog because it all starts there.  I also like the fact that throughout the book they remind you to temper your expectations and to remember that success is not a guarantee.  I would recommend this to anyone who might want to pursue being a problogger.

Geek Elements

We are going to take a break from the Geek news today.  I am going to take you on a trip and take a look at the essential elements of my geekery.   In essence, these are the five basic food groups of Geekdom.  The images selected and included in the slideshow are part of a balanced diet in all things geek.  First up is the daily recommended dose of television and movies.  Next, everyone knows that reading is fundamental.  Take a look; it’s a Comic Book… Reading Rainbow.  HAHA!!  Now it is time to get some exercise and work on that hand eye coordination with an array of different video games.  And finally no ensemble is complete as the young people say without representing with apparel from your favorite geek property.

The Wolverine Trailer

A double dose of trailers for ‘The Wolverine’ just hit the internet and after viewing both, I have a bit of a mixed reaction.  Although this installment looks to be better than the previous ‘Wolverine: Origins’ that really is not saying much.  The level of disdain I have for that movie makes it difficult for me to have an untainted outlook on this new entry to the series.  Early reports claimed the film would be based on a very popular ‘Wolverine’ comic book story arc set in Japan.  However, from what I saw in the trailers, the movie has no semblance of what I remember from the source material.  That may be a minor nitpick on my part but I will give the movie a fair chance to redeem the series.

Free Comic Book Day

Mark your calendars!  I wanted to inform everyone about Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), an annual event that happens each year on the first Saturday in May.  FCBD began in 2002 by the North American comic book industry with three purposes in mind.  Promote the joys of reading comic books (and reading in general), entice past comic readers to return and thank existing readers for their continued support.   Every year on Free Comic Book Day, participating comic book shops give away thousands of specially marked comics at no cost to you.  However, the retailers do have to pay for each issue that they bring in as part of the promotion.   So if you do decide to take advantage of this, if you can please try to purchase something while you are there.  Just click this link http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/992 to find a participating store in your area.

Kick-Ass 2 Trailer

*DISCLAIMER* -  If you are offended by some colorful language… You may want to skip this one.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the debut trailer for ‘Kick-Ass 2’ that just hit the internet today.  Based on the popular comic book series, this movie is the follow up to the 2010 film that unfortunately went unappreciated at the box office but managed to gain notoriety upon its release on Blu-ray and DVD.
Most of the main stars from the previous movie are back to reprise their roles.  Aaron Johnson returns as the titular main character ‘Kick-Ass’ along with Christopher Mintz-Plasse as his arch-nemesis ‘The Mother F%&*^r’ and Chloe Moretz as everyone’s favorite mini vigilante assassin ‘Hit-Girl.’  There are also a couple of new but familiar faces added to the mix as well.  The most noteworthy being Jim Carrey in the role of ‘Colonel Stars and Stripes‘, leader of the superhero team ‘Justice Forever.’
From the trailer, the film looks to be delivering the same over-the-top comic book action and ultra-violence that made the previous film so enjoyable.  I for one cannot wait to see the final product when it hits theaters in August.

Geek Cool!?

With not that much geek worthy news to talk about in the u-nerd-verse this week, I thought I would take this time to write about my life in geek culture.  For as long as I can recall, I have always been a geek.  It was never an easy thing to be growing up.  It was not the badge of honor in those days like it is today.  There was always constant ridicule from the “cool kids.”  Thankfully, now those days feel like a distant memory.  In recent years, the “cool kids” have embraced the very things (comic books, video games etc.) that made me the outcast.  Being a geek is still not always cool but it is ok.

Deadpool Video Game Trailer

Check out the “NEW” trailer for the upcoming “Deadpool” game.  No release date has been announced as of yet but I cannot wait to get my hands on it. We may finally have a Marvel video game that can rival the Batman Arkham series.  Other than that series, most comic book based video games have been subpar at best. This game looks like a blast to play and captures Deadpool’s quirky humor perfectly.

Iron Man 3 Trailer

Here it is!!  Today the final trailer for “Iron Man 3” has hit the interwebs for your viewing pleasure before it heads to the big screen.  The first entry to kick off the 2013 summer movie season and Marvel’s Phase 2 which culminates in 2015 with “The Avengers 2.”
I was a little underwhelmed by the previous entry in the Iron Man series but by the looks of this trailer I get the sense they have fixed the issues that plagued “Iron Man 2.”   If this is any indication of the quality of comic book films coming out this year will be awesometacular.   Make mine Marvel!!

Obama Epic Fail

Just another example of the reach of geek culture as the President of the United States Barack Obama attempted to let his geek flag fly.  Apparently, during a press conference Friday afternoon the President used the phrase “Jedi mind-meld” when speaking about federal spending cuts. He inadvertently made the ultimate nerd no-no as Jedi’s from Star Wars do mind tricks and Vulcans from Star Trek do mind-melds.  In some geek circles, confusing Star Wars and Star Trek is equivalent to a mortal sin.  I just find it all a bit amusing as the President tried to gain some geek cred but ended up with the dreaded epic fail.  Click the link for the full story.  http://tinyurl.com/a2ys648

Game of Thrones - Season 3 Trailer

Hear Ye’ Hear Ye’ all “Game of Thrones” fans, also known as Thronies.  We are just a little over a month away from the premiere of Season 3 on March 31st.  To occupy that time here is the new trailer for the upcoming season.  After watching it all I can say is, “Can it be any more epic?”  I have not read any of the books that the show is based on so I am not sure what to expect in this upcoming season.  Have you read any of the books?

San Diego Comic-Con 2013

San Diego Comic-Con has long been known as the mecca of the u-nerd-verse.  Every year the San Diego Convention Center is invaded by the legions of geeks and huddled masses.  This year proved to be no different as tickets went on sale on February 16th and sold out in a mere 93 minutes.  It just displays the extent of the appeal of geek culture and its reach into the mainstream.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog titled “The Geekfast Club”.  First off, what is a geek?  There are a couple of definitions of a geek but the one I am referring to is an enthusiast or expert in a particular hobby.  Therefore, in many instances anybody can be a geek about something.  The days of it being a derogative term are nearly gone, as many intellectual properties considered a part of geek culture such as Marvel’s The Avengers and Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise have gained mainstream notoriety and success.  My blog will run the gamut of the geek culture spectrum.  It will contain news, reviews, and my own personal thoughts on subjects such as movies, television, comic books, video games and a host of other subjects labeled as geek.

Sincerely Yours,
The Geekfast Club
